story

Fashion and lifestyle writer Jordan Bunker talks fashion, social media and dressing for wet weather, and presents his edit of Hunter Original collection for spring/summer 2017.

From talking trends with GQ Magazine to freelancing for a range of independent publications and editing content across his own website, Jordan Bunker has made his name as authority on menswear. A champion of well-made basics and investment pieces, he combines a minimal, monochrome aesthetic with his favourite pieces from the new collection.

What inspired you to write about men’s fashion?

Spacing half

I’ve always wanted to write about menswear. I wouldn’t be able to say why, but I just found myself being interested in it. When it came to deciding what I wanted to study at university I was torn between architecture and journalism. I chose the latter and never looked back, doing everything I could to give myself the best chance of having a career in fashion journalism.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

Spacing half

When it comes to style, I focus on wearing well-made basics, pieces that I know are made from good materials. I like to invest in clothes that I know I will wear frequently and last for years. I’d say it’s clean and considered. As for my photography, it’s something that’s always changing depending on what I’m shooting. I’m quite considered, I like to create a clear picture in my head, knowing what I want to achieve and then execute it.

Your images often have quite a monochrome, melancholic feel to them, how did this come about?

Spacing half

I’m not entirely sure. I go through stages where my photography will be quite dark, with light areas to create contrast, but then if you scroll through my feed it is much brighter, whiter and more minimal. I’ve started to move away from that aesthetic, when you are always looking for clean white spaces, you restrict yourself from not considering anything else. Effectively, you blinker yourself.

Where do you go to find inspiration for your work?

Spacing half

Inspiration comes from those around me. Working in this industry you meet so many people, creatives all working on their own projects and all with their own style. Without realising I guess I take influence from everyone, traits that I like from other people’s work and then bringing that altogether for what I produce.

What aspect of your work are you most passionate about?

Spacing half

Both the words I write and the photography that comes with it. When viewed together I hope they show a piece of work that has taken time to produce. I want my words to evoke something and for people to have learnt something.

How has the growth of social media and online content impacted your work?

Spacing half

Massively. Social media is such an important tool when it comes to interacting with both people and brands. It allows us, as bloggers, to create relationships with people and companies that before were only accessible by email. It’s a shortcut to what could be the start of a relationship.

How do you approach dressing for a rainy day?

Spacing half

It’s got to be practical, without completely sacrificing style. I’ll choose a jacket with a hood, something that is breathable and most importantly, waterproof. You don’t want to be turning up to meetings not feeling your best. As for shoes, I stay away from canvas and suede.

Spacing half

How did you go about styling your look for today’s shoot?

Spacing half

Taking into consideration what I’ve just mentioned about practicality, this jacket is ideal for rainy days. With it still being winter, I chose to wear a lambswool roll neck for warmth and slim black jeans for a look that was meeting appropriate.

Spacing half

What is your favourite piece from the spring/summer 2017 collection?

Spacing half

I think it has to be the waterproof backpack. I enjoy the structure of it and for a day of shooting I can see it being great for carrying everything I need for the day: camera, lens, laptop and notebook.
